Treating Dry Skin

Amanda Richards just came home from skiarea and was complaining to her friend Roberta Sulivan about the terrible issues she had with dry skin from the frigid winds. Roberta told her that she had exactly the same skin problem at La Loge des Gardes, Jura mountain, France. Another skiier laid out the three tricks that will keep your skin in good condition in nasty winter weather. She definitely expects to use that on her trip to Lofsdalen, Sweden in the next few weeks.

Winter is the worst time on our skin. Many people fight itchy, dry, flaking, rough and painful skin. Running to the nearest shopping center to find the most well known healing lotions and creams to help eliminate the pain and heal the flaking for moments of relief. However,  most folks are missing the vital and simple ways to not only get relief from dry, chapped and cracked skin, but also can go a long way to prevent it.

We as humans are made up mostly of water. For some reason, in cold weather, we don’t consider the need the body has of drinking enough water. During summer, when we are losing fluids through sweat and doing yard work, we we feel how much we need to drink lots of water to replace the same amount of water as we lost. During the winter the frigid air does much the same to our body. It withdraws that water right out of our bodies. This then dries out our skin, leaving it cracked and itchy. Making sure that you are taking in 8 to 10 glasses of water a day will help you win the fight over your dried out and rough skin. Use this one tip for the next two weeks and you will begin to see a noticeable difference in your skin in a matter of days.

Staying with the necesity of moisture, a good moisturizing cream is also a good idea. It is important to find one that fits your skin type so that you are not going to end up with oily uncomfortable skin. I recommend a cream as opposed to a lotion in the winter, because a cream is thicker and more protective of the skin. Also spend a moment or so and read the label. The cream or lotion that you use in the summer probably won’t be appropriate in the winter. Stay away from a cream or lotion with alcohol in the first few ingredients, as alcohol will actually dry out your skin.

Make sure to dress appropriately in the cold. Before you laugh at this and scratch your head over what clothing has to do with battling dry skin, think this one over. The more bare skin that you have increases the opportunity that the cold has to suck the moisture from your skin. Try to layer your clothes and let that innermost layer be clothes that are made of cotton. Cotton will let you skin breathe, will keep you warm and won’t irritate your skin.

By heeding these three basic steps, you will not only start getting a big improvement in that annoying dry skin, an not only that you will prevent your skin from becoming dry. Drinking plenty of fluids, the correct moisturizing cream for you and the right clothing and you will have moist, healthy and glowing skin.
